Valentine’s day is Tuesday and this time always reminds me of Jerles and I first Valentine’s day 19 years ago. We were living in Twenty-nine Palms, CA where my husband was stationed as a Marine. There was not much out there, just dirt and a few local restaurants. The day before Valentine’s day, we drove an hour to another town for shopping and it was just Wal-Mart. So, we made the best of the situation. I went one way and he went another trying to hide our gifts from each other. At this time, we were 21 years old and I was 5 months pregnant with our first son. I put everything I bought in the trunk of my car, planning on getting it out after Jerles went to sleep.
That evening, I went out to my car and grabbed all the goodies. I had this huge basket that I filled with chocolates, one of those solid, huge Hershey kisses, a bottle of sparkling apple cider, homemade coupon book, a card, and I filled champagne glasses with red hots. I tied the “Will you be my Valentine’s” balloon to the handle of the basket and placed it at the foot of the bed. I thought, “Jerles would open his eyes and that would be the first thing he saw. Well things sometimes do not go as planned.
Jerles got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. It was still dark outside, I was laying there praying that he would not stub his toe on the basket. As he started walking toward the door, I heard this loud scream and a thump. It was not my husband hitting his foot, it was his tuck and roll out our bedroom door, through the hallway and into our second bedroom. I was laughing so hard I almost peed my pants. You see, as he walked past the basket, the air moved, causing the balloon to gently touch his shoulder. He screamed like a girl. It was the funniest thing ever.
Over the years, Jerles has made me laugh, and there are many great stories to look back on. I am glad I was able to share this one with you all.
